This Week in Congress
This week, the House voted on three bills and they included:
- H.R. 28 would amend Title IX to prohibit schools receiving federal funds from allowing transgender women to participate in women’s sports;
- H.R. 33 would amend the tax code to reduce double taxation for individuals and companies doing business in both the U.S. and Taiwan; and
- H.R. 30 would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to provide that aliens who have been convicted of or who have committed sex offenses or domestic violence are inadmissible and deportable.
Additionally, the House voted on a bill relating to Amtrak, two bills relating to the administration of disaster assistance programs, and a bill authorizing federal agencies to provide certain assistance for hazard mitigation for electric utilities. Finally, the House Ways and Means Committee held a hearing on Tuesday regarding the expiring tax provisions and at least two of the witnesses focused on 199A and its importance to the economy and jobs. The Senate voted on S. 5, which would require the Secretary of Homeland Security to take into custody any alien who has been charged in the U.S. with theft. The House passed its version of the bill (H.R. 29) last week with the support of 48 Democrats. Republicans have a 51-47 seat majority following the resignation of Vice President-elect J.D. Vance last Friday. But Sen.-elect Jim Justice (R-WV) was sworn in on Monday, and the Ohio Governor is expected to announce his appointment to fill Vance’s seat very soon.
