Budget Reconciliation Strategy
Last week, congressional leaders met with President Trump to discuss budget reconciliation strategies. Reports from the meeting indicate that it did not result in clarity regarding strategy or substance, and that the party remains divided on both points. During another meeting, House GOP members expressed frustration over the long list of potential revenue raisers produced by the House Budget Committee, with some committee leaders complaining that the list was compiled without their input. House Republicans continued their internal debate this week at their annual policy retreat in Florida, where they coalesced on whether to pursue a one- or two-bill strategy and on top-line numbers for a budget resolution, the measure that will kick-start the budget reconciliation process. President Trump and Vice President Vance addressed the retreat.
