This Week in Congress

The annual defense bill and longer-term reauthorizations for aviation, farm and nutrition programs will dominate the congressional agenda in July as Congress simultaneously tackles government spending before the September 30th deadline.  The House is slated to consider its FY24 defense authorization measure the week of July 10th and is eyeing a vote on a five-year Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) bill the following week. While timing on Senate action on FAA is unclear, Majority Leader Schumer (D-NY) said he wants to move on the chamber’s version of the defense measure quickly.  Also, members of Congress are seeking separate deals on legislation that would address artificial intelligence, pharmacy benefit managers and bank failures. Republicans are continuing various probes, including potential impeachments, and efforts to overturn recent regulations issued by the Biden administration. The Senate is looking to make more progress on President Biden’s judicial and executive nominees.
